My seven-year old son could play the entire Level One book within a couple of weeks, which happily is composed of popular nursery tunes he knows, so he can self-correct when his playing doesn't sound right. He started with an instructor last week, who was impressed with his high level of commitment and interest - which I attribute to these books! Enjoying an early success at playing whole songs has been inspirational and fun for him, and he wants to keep learning. Now he is playing through Level Two with both hands! In a month! My own childhood experience with beginner piano books was so deadly dull that I gave up quickly, but this one, heck, even I play it too.You do have to slightly 'deface' your keyboard with stickers, but they'll peel off later, and they are the really essential part, since they teach the keys by visual association (C note is a cat face, D is a dog, E is elephant, etc) and the key labels match the note signatures visually. No need to start memorizing note placement until child is already playing successfully, and then it comes naturally at that point. The notes are also numbered to show which finger (1-5) should be playing the note. Can't recommend enough. The Level One book teaches the right hand, treble clef, and no black keys, with basic time signatures. The Level Two book adds the left hand and bass clef, with some black keys and additional theory. There is also a third level which we don't yet have. After this series of books, children will be able to transition easily into more complicated lesson series.

I can only give a qualified recommendation for this book/series.Pros:+ The large format and the colorful pictures will likely appeal to the very young kids (under 5). The papers are sturdy so they won't tear easily.+ The tunes in the book are all well known. This means that even if you are not 100% comfortable with all the different aspects of the score, you can probably guess the right thing to do.Cons:- There is very little instruction. I kind of understand why they went this route -- little kids won't understand all that music theory stuff right away anyhow. However, even at the very basic level, there is more going on than just finding the right note on the keyboard (e.g., how long to hold the note for, what are rests, what different time signatures mean). The book offers just one terse sentence for each concept. If you aren't already familiar with them, they probably don't make a lot of sense.- at 12 songs a book, the progression of difficulty in the book is probably too steep. Potentially, kids might get discouraged after breezing through the easy first book, which focuses on just one hand and stays within one octave.- there is also a potential pitfall of being too dependent on this particular format -- at some point, your kid will want to venture past the 36 songs in the series (though the company offers to convert your regular scores into their color coded animal format for the low low price of $20 a page). So, overall, I think book 1 is a reasonably fun introduction for kids under 5, who are most likely too young to take real lessons. They can poke at the keys, matching pictures to stickers; they don't have to worry too much about fingering or whatever. If they find the book cute and associate a generally positive attitude toward the piano, it's $15-$20 well spent. By the time they turn 5 or older, they would be better served by a more formal series like Alfred or Bastien etc. But most importantly, they'd need a knowledgeable and supportive teacher to guide them.

Overpriced, but really good. I have 3 daughters, age 6, 7 and 12. The 6 and 7 year olds LOVE THIS. They had little interest in learning to play before this, and I had tried various books (Teaching Little Fingers To Play and a couple of others). The 6 year old especially has loved this, partly I think because it makes learning piano like learning to read, which she's also excited about right now. It's not going to get you to an advanced level, and you'll have to suffer through many renditions of one-fingered "Mary Had A Little Lamb". But it's a pretty good way to get young kids excited and confident around the piano or keyboard (the stickers also work on a keyboard).

I bought this to begin teaching my 3 yr old granddaughter piano. It is super easy to teach and has all of her favorite songs. Because she is familiar with the songs, it's easier for her to comprehend timing. Matching the notes in the book with the keyboard is super easy with the animals. She's learning to read music without realizing it. We will stay on this book until she's mastered it and then move up to the next one. It's a great system to get little ones familiar with how you make music by hitting the right notes. It's very exciting for her, because when she plays it correctly, she has a huge sense of pride!

My 6-year old granddaughter used this book and loved it. Within a week she could play all the songs and even memorized a few bars of some of them. We haven't started working on how to hold her hands or anything like that, but are mostly using these books to get her interested in the piano. I've already ordered the Level 2 book. I highly recommend for anyone wanting to get their child started with the piano. It does NOT replace a piano teacher, though, since she is not learning the correct hand formations without an adult or teacher enforcing the "right hand" only. We chose to let her just explore the piano on her own and will introduce the correct hands once she expresses more interest. Right now she just wants to "do it on her own".
