There is doubtlessly a bounty of research here, but because it's organised alphabetically and in small sections, there is a lot of repetition. What I was most disappointed about with this book was that the Hangeul is mostly incorrect, which I think is just unfathomably bad editing (or did someone play a joke on the writer?), and i can't help feel that this detracts from the book's credibility.

The book appears to be a series of free standing articles, each based on a Korean word. The word is translated to English, the spelled in the Korean alphabet and the phonetic pronunciation is given. There is then a several page discussion of why this word is important to the Korean culture or people. There are three problems with the book. First, in the discussion, most words are related to Korean history or laws base on the teachings of Confucius. This is repetitious and changes little from word discussion to word discussion. Second, there are too many words discussed. Half as many would be a lot. Third, the author concentrates too much on differences. My experience in Korea lead me to believe that Korean people (or any people for that matter) can figure out your intentions and overlook mistakes in dealing with their culture. Reading this book would help in not making as many mistakes.

This book was well-researched and shows a subtle understanding of a wide variety of topics in Korean culture. I learned a great deal, and in many ways this book deepened my understanding of Korea and its people.However, and this is a big however, the fact that the entire book is riddled with spelling errors in the Korean translations is a very difficult problem to overlook. 침힘, for example, is awfully far off from 진심. The spelling errors are honestly unforgivable from a text that claims to respect Korean culture.Love, an American who has lived in Korea for the past ten years.

I agree with many of the reviews on here stating that the book has errors. I am only part way through the book and as a Korean learner the misspellings conflict with what I have learned thus far making it really odd to read and difficult to find confidence in what I am reading.

This is a very informative book. Having lived in South Korea, I was interested in the culture and learned much while living there. This book clears away some cobwebs to further understanding the Korean culture. I recommend this book to anyone planning to visit South Korea, and for those already accustomed with the country.

My grandson married a Korean girl this year. She is a lovely person and I met her family a few months ago at the wedding reception. I bought this book in order to help me understand the Korean Culture.The book format seems unusual because it basically defines more than 200 words that have cultural significance. I will be giving this book to my grandson and get some feedback about its usefulness.My overall impression is that is an excellent introduction to this topic.

If you're traveling to Korea, this book will help you understand the people and the mind set. I particularly liked the explaniation for the "Han" something I'd heard of but never fully understood. A primer for anyone attempting to live or do business in the peninsula, this book is a must to prevent one from stepping into an awkward, embarrassing situation.
